Stop driveway water becoming a problem.

How to spot ponding and runoff risks, why levels matter, and what to settle before asphalt or concrete goes down.

Drainage is more than adding a grate

A channel, sump or pipe only works when the finished levels lead water to it and the outlet can take that water somewhere appropriate. Start by asking where rain lands, how it crosses the site, where it is collected and where it goes next.

New Zealand Building Code clause E1 deals with disposing of surface water and protecting people and other property from its adverse effects.[1] The right solution still depends on the site, catchment, soil, levels and available connection or discharge point.

Warning signs to photograph before asking for advice

  • Water sits beside a garage, doorway, retaining wall or boundary.
  • Runoff crosses a footpath or flows onto a neighbour's property.
  • Silt collects at one low point or a grate regularly blocks.
  • The existing driveway has settled, rutted or cracked where it stays wet.

1. Follow the water from the top of the site

Look at the hard-surface area, high and low points, slopes, collection points, pipe route, normal outlet and the route water would take if a drain blocked. Include water arriving from an uphill lawn, roof or neighbouring area. Moving water off the driveway is not enough if it is then concentrated beside a building, boundary or unstable bank.

MBIE describes E1 as the Building Code clause for disposal of surface water from external surfaces and for ensuring that surface water cannot enter buildings. The clause establishes performance outcomes; an Acceptable Solution or specifically designed Alternative Solution may provide the compliance pathway.[1] The correct pathway depends on the wider building and site design, not the surfacing trade alone.

2. Six questions a driveway plan should answer

Waimakariri District Council states that its Engineering Code of Practice controls infrastructure intended to remain fit for its design life and notes a February 2025 update to the stormwater and land-drainage section.[2] Selwyn similarly maintains a controlled Engineering Code of Practice for subdivision and capital works.[3] Christchurch’s Infrastructure Design Standard and Construction Standard Specification separate design requirements from construction requirements; both may be relevant to development infrastructure.[4]

3. Checks worth making during construction

Protect the agreed levels

Set-out errors accumulate. If excavation depth, basecourse thickness or finished-surface level drifts, a designed fall can flatten or reverse. Establish a stable datum and record critical levels at subgrade, basecourse and final-surface stages.

Photograph drainage before it is covered

Photograph pipes, junctions, bedding, outlets and service crossings before backfill. Record invert levels or test results where the design requires them. A completion record should allow another person to understand the route without guessing.

Keep construction silt out of drains

During earthworks, the permanent drainage system may be incomplete and exposed soil can mobilise. The Ministry for the Environment identifies sediment as a significant freshwater contaminant and links erosion risk to the way water moves through land.[5] Site controls should keep clean water separate where practicable, stabilise entrances, manage stockpiles and prevent sediment-laden runoff from simply entering public sumps.

Check the finished falls and outlets

A visual level survey is stronger than intuition. Confirm the final surface falls, inlet positions, outlet condition and transitions at the road boundary. Water testing can help reveal local ponding, but it does not replace survey or hydraulic verification where those are required.

4. If water already ponds, find the cause first

Local ponding may result from surface deformation, blocked collection, insufficient fall or settlement in the pavement foundation. Water at a building threshold may indicate upstream level errors rather than a missing grate. Erosion at an outlet may indicate concentrated flow without energy control. Each symptom should be traced back through the water path before repair is specified.

For a useful initial review, provide the property address, site plan, spot levels if available, photographs during and after rainfall, known outlet locations, drainage drawings and the planned surface type.
