Asphalt or concrete: which suits your driveway?
A plain-English comparison of appearance, use, maintenance, future repairs and the groundwork both options need.
The short answer
Asphalt often suits larger areas where a smooth, dark and continuous finish is wanted. Concrete often suits owners who want a lighter surface, defined panels or a particular decorative finish. Neither option is automatically better. The right choice depends on the vehicles using it, the shape and slope of the site, drainage, access for equipment, the look you want and how future repairs would be handled.
The part you cannot see matters just as much as the finish. Excavation, a stable base, compaction, levels, drainage and supported edges all affect how the driveway performs.
Four things to decide first
- What vehicles will use the driveway, including delivery trucks, trailers or motorhomes?
- Where will rainwater go in a heavy downpour?
- Do you want a continuous dark finish or a lighter, panelled or decorative finish?
- Are future trenches, extensions or underground-service repairs likely?
1. Start with how the driveway will actually be used
Tell the contractor about the heaviest regular and occasional vehicles, tight turning areas, slopes, garage thresholds, existing soft spots and any place water already sits. Also mention planned gates, future building work or services that may later cross the driveway.
Drainage matters with either surface. The finished levels need to move water away from buildings and towards an appropriate collection or discharge point. MBIE's Building Code clause E1 covers protection from the adverse effects of surface water.[1]

A residential driveway is not a state highway, but Waka Kotahi's asphalt material guidance illustrates an important point: asphalt quality depends on the material, manufacture, placement and compaction—not just the word “asphalt” on a quote.[2] Concrete also needs a clear project specification rather than a finish photograph alone.
3. Think about maintenance and future repairs
Ask how each option would be repaired if a service trench is needed or one area settles. Asphalt repairs are often more straightforward but can remain visible. Concrete may require removal and replacement of a panel, and new concrete may not match the existing colour exactly.
For either surface, recurring cracks, ponding or settlement can point to water, loading or foundation problems. Fixing only the visible surface may not solve the cause. Christchurch City Council's construction specifications also show how public pavement work connects foundation preparation, materials, surfacing and testing.[3]
4. What to send when asking for a quote
- site address, measured area and photographs;
- vehicle types, frequency and turning/braking locations;
- existing surface and known construction depth;
- levels, gradients, thresholds and drainage destination;
- desired surface, edge detail and appearance;
- council crossing approval or specification if road reserve is affected;
- access, staging, working hours and required reopening date;
- testing, warranties or project-specific quality records.
Ask every contractor to identify excavation, basecourse, compaction, drainage, edge work and the finished surface separately enough that you can compare like with like.
